LET’S EXPLORE HOW AND WHEN
How ADHD Manifests
Inattention manifests behaviorally in ADHD as wandering off task, lacking persistence, having difficulty sustaining focus, and being disorganized and is not due to defiance or lack of comprehension.
Hyperactivity refers to excessive motor activity ( a child running about) when it is not appropriate, or excessive fidgeting, tapping, or talkativeness. In adults, hyperactivity may manifest as extreme restlessness or wearing others out with their activity.
Impulsivity refers to hasty actions that occur in the moment without forethought and that have high potential for harm to the individual (e.g., darting into the street without looking).
When ADHD Manifests
Families may first observe excessive motor activity when a child is a toddler, although symptoms of ADHD are oftenly identified when kids enter elementary school, when difficulties with inattention become more apparent.
Symptoms of ADHD are typically present before the age of 12 and exist in more than one setting (e.g., school, home, and community)
ADHD is more common is twice as common in male and female children and 1.6:1 more in adults. Males tend to commonly present with both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms while girls tend to present primarily with inattentive symptoms.
The heritability of ADHD is substantial and is elevated in first-degree biological relatives of individuals with ADHD.
